  • Some high level insights include:
    • Over $48B spent on Advanced Energy and Clean Energy-related R&D by the U.S. federal government signifying a 84% growth during FY2018-FY2022.
    • 96% of advanced energy and clean energy-related federal R&D awards were made through grants worth $47B during FY2018-FY2022. During the same time period, $1.3B worth of SBIR/STTR awards were awarded for advanced energy and clean energy-related R&D awards.
    • Use Cases - Market verticals where technology adoption is highest include Aerospace/Defense, Automotive, Energy & Power, Agriculture, Manufacturing and Building Construction. Examples of high-frequency use cases being invested include Industrial Waste Heat Recovery, Traffic Flow Optimization, Spacecraft Propulsion, Power Generation, Public Transport Electrification etc.
    • Agencies - HHS and DOE have awarded more than 72% of R&D awards. Within DOE, the Office of Energy Efficiency Renewable Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, Office of Science, Fossil Energy, are making the most R&D investments. Other prominent civilian agencies include the DOA, DOT, DOI, and NSF which comprises $10B worth of advanced energy and clean energy awards.
    • 13K+ Suppliers and Research Institutions were awarded advanced energy and clean energy R&D awards during FY2018-FY2022; Only 14% of awardees were underserved. SBIR/STTR program has utilized the highest proportion of underserved suppliers with 37%, OTAs utilized 22% underserved suppliers whereas grants had the lowest share of underserved suppliers at 12%
