Some European Commissioners’ travel expenses have been analysed by Belgian magazine Knack and the findings were published recently. It discovers that in the first two months of 2016, for example, almost €500,000 was spent on 261 official trips. While some tallies show that expenses on travel and accommodation were moderate, some rack up high, like a visit to Baku, Azerbaijan costing €75,000 involving a chartered plane journey. Documents on travel expenses were requested by Spanish transparency NGO Access Info, which has been trying for three years to get access to this information. Apart from visibility for a small part of 2016, the struggle continues to gain fuller transparency. The European Commission says making this information public would cause excessive administrative burden. Politico has the full details of where to go to find out more, and have your say.
