The UK Home Office has just published its “Independent Review of the Modern Slavery Act 2015: Final Report.” The construction industry, having been highlighted by the National Crime Agency as one of the most common sectors for labour exploitation in the UK owing to its ‘aggressive business models and unethical procurement and recruitment practices,’ has responded to the report. The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), which has long been focusing on reducing incidences of modern slavery across the supply chain, says it welcomes much of the report, which includes many of the CIOB’s recommendations, especially that the “Government should extend section 54 requirements to the public sector and strengthen its public procurement processes.” It is conceivable, says Politics Home, that those companies not delivering on these requirements might not be eligible for public contracts. Read more about the response here.
