Nuclear proliferation is always on the Pentagon’s mind. The global community has reached several agreements and fortunately, very few aggressors have made themselves known in recent years. In this light, the Department of Defense is exploring new ways to tackle the complexity of nuclear threats.

Virtual reality (VR) offers the most pragmatic approach to training armed forces for nuclear scenarios in particular. Most branches of the military are expressing an interest in VR technology for a variety of training and simulation uses; nuclear training is a  whole other ballpark. Soldiers can enact simulated battle sequences –– it isn’t so simple for testing responses to nuclear weapons.

Training personnel in nuclear situations will provide twofold. On one front, troops can be trained in a synthetic environment which poses no real risk to their life or limb. More complex and high-risk scenarios can be addressed when enacted in virtual scenarios. On the other other hand, the Pentagon will be provided insight into how trainees are already apt to respond in these situations. Decision-making will be tested to be understood and then refined to a point of effectiveness.
