According to a report by Tussell, in 2019 the UK public sector market grew by 17% – 2,076 public sector buyers awarded 45,216 contracts worth £93 billion to 16,218 suppliers. Despite Central Government being the biggest customer type, it awarded less than half of the total value of contracts. The largest contract awarding department was The Ministry of Defence, whose largest deal was worth £2.1 billion with Babcock for submarine engineering services. The construction sector and advanced technologies scooped high numbers of contracts.

The new government has promised further public investment, particularly for infrastructure and healthcare. For a breakdown by value of contract, types of contract, contract expiry dates by value in 2020, and to see what’s in store for this year, read this from Open Access Government.
