As the country continues to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, testing remains one of the keys to mitigating the virus and reopening the economy.  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been rapidly reviewing and approving Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) in order to ensure adequate supply and infrastructure exists across the country.

COVID-19 testing is classified into two uses:

1. To test if someone has COVID-19. Two types of tests are currently being administered to test for this:

  •  High Complexity Molecular-Based Laboratory Developed Tests that use Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).  These tests are more accurate but require several days of turnaround time and processing at approved labs.
  • Antigen tests, which can be done at a doctor’s office (similar to a STREP test) and can return results within 15 minutes to an hour.  These are key to providing the necessary testing capacity across the economy.

2. To test if someone HAS PREVIOUSLY HAD Covid-19SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Tests blood tests determine if someone was previously infected.
