According to a new report approved by the Department of Homeland Security’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC), U.S. critical infrastructure is in “a pre-9/11 moment” when it comes to cybersecurity. If government and industry don’t dramatically increase their efforts to protect critical infrastructure, they risk missing a “narrow and fleeting window of opportunity before a watershed, 9/11-level cyberattack.” The report suggests how to avoid and prepare for such an attack by creating highly secure communication networks that are used only for critical command and by dramatically easing the process for sharing cyber threat information between industry and government.
