Public officials tasked with helping their localities bounce back after natural disasters and other adverse events met with budget and financial officials to discuss collaboration, overlapping responsibilities, and spending. In discussing how impacts from these types of events often extend beyond the specifically affected area, Brian Strong, San Francisco’s chief resilience officer, called for a wider benefit for such public projects. “It’s no longer good enough just to do a seismic repair to a seawall.” Instead, it should be a broader effort that “also helps promote economic development for the parts of your city that are seeing high unemployment levels.”
