Since its inception in 2011, the Department of Energy’s (DOE) SunShot program has helped to drive innovation in solar energy by funding research, studies, grants, educational programs and competitions to increase the viability of solar as an alternative energy source. Its goal is to make solar energy “cost-competitive with traditional energy by 2020,” and in furtherance will be investing $46.2 million into 48 solar energy projects this year. Of this funding, $25.7 million will go to 20 startup solar energy companies working to develop “cutting-edge energy storage and solar generation technology.”
