Sustainable procurement

We have had some interesting articles and discussion recently on Public Spend Forum Europe around the topic of sustainable procurement including the “social value” question.  Professor Sue Arrowsmith here Professor Sue Arrowsmith and a Bracing View of Sustainable Procurement | Public Spend Forum Europe argued that public procurement is not always the best way for government’s to promote social policies, for instance. Andy Davies of the London Universities Purchasing Consortium wrote a very thoughtful two-part article The Power of Public Purchasing: Human Rights in the Supply Chain around how to work with suppliers to help them improve their performance in sustainable procurement – do we try and take action at supplier selection stage, or focus more on working with firms once they are suppliers? We’d welcome other views – this is an increasingly important area for public procurement globally, we feel.
