CHIPS for America Outlines Vision for the National Semiconductor Technology Center
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a strategy paper detailing the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) vision, a research and development program established by President Biden’s CHIPS and Science Act. The NSTC aims to extend U.S. leadership in semiconductor research, design, engineering, and advanced manufacturing and build and sustain a semiconductor workforce development ecosystem. The center will work with academic and industry partners and offer programs for the entire ecosystem, including research institutions, community colleges, state and local governments, national labs, foundries, integrated device manufacturers, equipment vendors, materials suppliers, labor unions, and investors.

DOE to Announce $30 Million MAKE IT Prize to Accelerate Manufacturing of Critical Clean Energy Technologies
The U.S. Department of Energy is launching the Manufacture of Advanced Key Energy Infrastructure Technologies Prize, which will offer approximately $30 million in funding to encourage the domestic manufacturing of clean energy technology components. The prize is designed to move manufacturing facilities from planning to shovel-ready and promote vibrant manufacturing activity in communities. The prize has two tracks: a facilities track for building domestic manufacturing facilities for clean energy components, and a strategies track for teams promoting clean energy manufacturing activity in their regions. The prize will be launched in summer 2023.

NSF hosts Government, Industry Leaders to Discuss the Future of 6G Technology
The U.S. National Science Foundation hosted a workshop called “6G: Open and Resilient by Design” on April 21, which brought together industry, academia, civil society, and government leaders to discuss next-generation wireless technologies and services. The workshop aimed to survey information on R&D and standardization activities leading up to 6G so the U.S. can promote global competitiveness, affordability, security, resiliency, openness, and interoperability. The workshop discussed topics such as trusted technology, global connectivity, and novel materials and manufacturing. NSF also recently released a call for partnerships to advance Next-Generation Networks and Computing Systems, including 6G networks and services.

DHS S&T and CISA Forge Deep Partnership in Emerging Tech R&D
The US Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate are collaborating to deploy emerging technologies such as AI, advanced sensors, and data modeling for national security. CISA is overseeing cyber-specific applications while S&T is testing and developing the technology. They are exploring emerging technologies that can be incorporated into areas under threat, particularly US infrastructure. The two agencies are examining quantum encryption systems to strengthen the security of classical computing networks before quantum computers become viable.
