The U.S. National Science Foundation has launched the $16 million Responsible Design, Development, and Deployment of Technologies (ReDDDoT) program with philanthropic partners. Aimed at ethical technology development, it invites multidisciplinary proposals focusing on responsible design, development, and deployment, aligned with the “CHIPS and Science Act of 2022.” The initiative seeks inclusivity, workforce training, and societal benefits while mitigating harms, and emphasizing community engagement.

Energy: Energy Department Issues RFI for National Zero Emissions Building Definition Development

Additive Mfg:  Navy Researches Additive Manufacturing for Hydrodynamics Testing

The Naval Surface Warfare Center is studying the feasibility of using Large Scale Additive Manufacturing (LSAM) for naval model testing, focusing on the David Taylor Model Basin. The initiative, part of the LSAM FY 21-23 proposal, aims to determine if 3D printed models match traditional fiberglass models’ performance in resistance testing. Preliminary results show promising performance, leading to further funding for structural evaluation and testing in simulated sea states.

Weapons: The West Badly Needs More Missiles, But The Wait to Buy Them is Years Long

The wars in Ukraine and Gaza have sharply increased Western demand for Nasams increases due to geopolitical threats. Challenges include supply chain complexities and difficulties in quickly producing advanced weapons like the National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System, or Nasams. The Nasams supply chain involves over a thousand companies across two continents. NATO recently announced a $5.5 billion purchase of 1,000 Patriot missiles to enhance air defenses amid Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Aerospace: NASA’s New Investments in Commercialization-Focused Small Businesses

NASA announced the second round of Phase I awards for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Ignite, supporting American innovators in aerospace. Ten selected small businesses will receive up to $150,000 to establish the merit and feasibility of their proposed innovations within six months. SBIR Ignite focuses on Gallium Nitride (GaN), a next-gen semiconductor offering enhanced power efficiency and thermal tolerance compared to conventional silicon technology along with commercialization-driven companies, aiming to de-risk technologies and increase private-sector commercialization.
