Strengthening U.S. Semiconductor Manufacturing Through Strategic Agreements

The Department of Commerce recently agreed to preliminary terms with Wolfspeed and Edwards Vacuum to boost U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. These agreements represent significant milestones under the CHIPS and Science Act, funding advanced materials and manufacturing manufacturing that are critical inputs for assembling cutting-edge semiconductors.

Wolfspeed and Edwards Vacuum Lead the Way

  • The agreement with Wolfspeed covers their plan to expand silicon carbide production at their facility in North Carolina. Silicon carbide (SiC) is a critical material that offers superior performance in high-voltage &  high-temperature environments, making it essential for advanced semiconductors. Supporting domestic manufacturing of this material strengthens the ability to domestically produce next-generation semiconductors and stay at the forefront of technological innovation.
  • In tandem, Edwards Vacuum is set to expand its advanced manufacturing capabilities in upstate New York. The company’s specialized vacuum and abatement equipment plays a vital role in chip production by maintaining the ultra-clean environments needed for the intricate manufacturing process of semiconductors. By providing this equipment, Edwards Vacuum supports the broader semiconductor supply chain and ensures that domestic chipmakers have access to required high-tech tools made in the USA.

Momentum of the CHIPS Act

Together, these announcements demonstrate the continued momentum of the CHIPS Act toward onshoring US semiconductor manufacturing. By partnering with key players like Wolfspeed and Edwards Vacuum, the Department of Commerce is demonstrating its goal to approach the entire supply chain for semiconductors and strengthen national security.
