The Department of Commerce has announced a new $100 million funding opportunity known as the CARISSMA initiative (Chips AI/AE for Rapid, Industry-informed Sustainable Semiconductor Materials, and Processes). This competition is designed to accelerate U.S. research and development in critical semiconductor fields, including artificial intelligence, autonomous experimentation (AI/AE), and sustainability. As demand for semiconductors surges, CARISSMA aims to strengthen domestic capabilities, address industry challenges, and promote long-term sustainability in the U.S. semiconductor supply chain.
AI/AE combines synthesis and characterization tools to expedite material experimentation, accelerating the design of new semiconductor materials. It also enables research collaboration across multiple universities and labs simultaneously, providing greater opportunities for undergraduates to engage in semiconductor-related research.
Driving Sustainability and US Leadership in Semiconductor Manufacturing
CARISSMA also addresses the environmental impact of semiconductor production, focusing on sustainability initiatives.
