Just before the holiday season, the Department of Commerce announced three significant CHIPS Act awards to Samsung, Texas Instruments, and Amkor. These investments reflect ongoing efforts to bolster the U.S. semiconductor industry, strengthen supply chain resilience, and enhance technological innovation across key sectors.

Three Awards Before the Holidays

  1. Samsung was awarded funding to expand its advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility in Taylor, Texas. This project will focus on producing high-performance chips critical for a wide range of applications, including data centers, artificial intelligence, and automotive technologies. Samsung’s investment represents a major boost for domestic chip production and demonstrates the CHIPS Act’s emphasis on supporting globally recognized industry leaders.
  2. Texas Instruments (TI) also received CHIPS Act funding to upgrade and expand its facilities in Richardson, Texas. TI’s project will enhance production capacity for analog and embedded processing technologies, which are vital for consumer electronics, industrial equipment, and medical devices. By investing in these foundational technologies, TI is reinforcing its role as a key contributor to the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem.
  3. Amkor Technology was granted funding to establish a state-of-the-art semiconductor packaging and testing facility in Arizona. This facility will specialize in advanced packaging techniques, which are crucial for integrating increasingly complex chips. Amkor’s project addresses a critical bottleneck in the semiconductor supply chain, helping to ensure that domestically produced chips can be efficiently packaged and deployed.

Increasing the Domestic Supply Chain In Light of Growing World Tensions

These awards highlight the CHIPS Act’s continued impact on revitalizing the U.S. semiconductor industry. By supporting key players like Samsung, Texas Instruments, and Amkor, the program is fostering innovation, creating high-tech jobs, and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. As tensions rise between China and Taiwan, the global leader in semiconductor production, these investments underscore the strategic importance of onshoring microelectronics manufacturing. Strengthening domestic capabilities not only ensures supply chain resilience but also safeguards the U.S. against potential disruptions in a critical industry. The CHIPS Act is a vital step toward securing America’s position as a global leader in semiconductor technology while addressing national security concerns.
